Is Anybody Watching Gustav??

New Orleans near died from Katrina, the city existing below sea level and all---now billions of dollar spent to recover from Katrina, here we have the threat of "Gustav"---I have to ask myself, why? why do we humans spit in the face of Mother Nature---trust me its not nice to fool "Mother Nature"---
Yes its a marvel of modern science and technology that allows us to engineer and put in place an area below sea level and make use of it for habitation. Okay we have done it, and there it is----.----Now here comes "Gustav" and if its not "Gustav" then it invariably will be yet another storm---I hate sounding negative but hello??---logic tells us , its only a matter of time..---this year, next year---maybe he year after------?? Frankly I kinda admire our fickle finger off fate to Mother Nature---bring it on, we are here today and we will be here tomorrow---well some of us anyway.

  1. Real New Orleanians will never give up on their beautiful city. Real Americans will never give up on their own citizens. Oh, is New Orleans an American city? Sorry, it was hard to tell from your post.

  2. Living where you do Old Dude, I would guess this thought passes through your mind more than if you lived say, in Iowa. No group of citizens play roulette more with Ma Nature on a regular basis than you folks gathered around the the San Andreas and Santa Anna winds.

We humans settle where Life will be more convenient. Contrary ones like me settle where it isn't convenient, but the natural disasters usually take smaller bites.

  3. Why do people drive race cars and jump motorcycles over huge obstacles? Why am I not afraid living in Tornado Alley and my spouse wasn't afraid living in Earthquake alley in California? Human beings are the oddest sort of creations and we're basically experimental anyway thus expendable while we entertain the universe.

  4. I always think about it everytime a hurricane is even remotely near Florida. And I wonder why I stay to face them year after year (especially after 2004 when my area was hit back to back by 3 hurricanes). But then I think about other places and they have their own disasters waiting to happen. Like the mentions of Tornado Alley or the earthquakes and wildfires and winds in California. Plus the crippling blizzards in the northern states. So I know how to deal with the hurricanes, I'll just stay here. And that's why people live where they do and deal with Mother Nature the way they do.

  6. At this point, almost everywhere is a fool's paradise - living along the Mississippi, along tornado alley, in the fire zones of California. Frankly, I think it's crazier to live in the desert Southwest, especially when the water wars come.

  7. We got quite a bit of water----but a lot of big lawns and formal gardens and a number of golf courses can be sacrificed---and we have just recently announced the building of a new Desalination plant that will process some 50,000 gallons of ocean water into fresh water a day.---hmm wonder what they plan on doing with all the salt extractions??
